Célèbre | Himalayas, Yunnan

Founded by the Zhan brothers in 2015, Célèbre is the crown jewel of Eurus’ portfolio. Originally from a family specialising in fine tea, the brothers took the same approach to winemaking with a singular goal: finding terroir designated for the best wines of China.

But their journey began much earlier: during the decade leading up to the establishment of Célèbre, they trod through thousands of miles in the high, treacherous Himalayan plateau in Yunnan province.

They visited 236 villages, built 115 weather stations, and recorded the soils and geology of 1643 individual plots. Only 5 villages were deemed to surpass their rigorous standard. Sitting at 2,200 to 2.700 m above sea level, it is one of the most unique vine-growing conditions in the world. Drenched in the sun but cooled by altitude and breezes brought upon by glacial rivers, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay retain an unforeseen level of maturity without losing freshness.

After years of pruning, replanting, and working with the most capable talents, Célèbre has finally made their first wines in 2018.

Wines

Célèbre, Red 2018

The inaugural vintage. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from 5 villages in the Himalayan plateau, the vineyards average at 2500 m above sea level. It is truly the terroir that shaped this magnificent red, with meticulous care in both the vineyards and the cellar. The grapes are hand-picked, with a short cold soak and fermented for 3 weeks in stainless steel vats. The wine was then fermented in 100 % new French oak for 18 months, and bottle aged for a year before release.

We think this wine captures the essential spirit of the Himalayan Terroir - momentous, complex, and explosive.

Célèbre, White 2021

Perhaps the highest Chardonnay in the world? In the village of Siyong-Gong where dolomitic soils meets schist, Chardonnay finds a different personality. Sourced from the highland villages of the Himalayas at an altitude of 2,550 meters, Célèbre 2021 reflects the purity of its extraordinary terroir. The vineyards, cradled by snow-capped peaks and tempered by gentle breezes, produce a Chardonnay of striking minerality and refined acidity. In the glass, it shimmers with a brilliant lemon hue. The nose unfolds with delicate citrus notes—orange blossom and clementine—layered with subtle peach and a touch of fennel. With aeration, elegant toasty nuances emerge, adding depth and complexity. The palate is finely structured and silky, with a well-integrated balance of acidity and alcohol. Its lively freshness carries through to a persistent, harmonious finish.

All of Me, Rosé 2022

Made by the same team as Célèbre, All of me is a tribute to all Tibetan women. Their hard work is respected, acknowledged, and praised through the wines and the characterful labels designed by Dolma, the local artist. Unusually, this Rosé is made by the saignée method, where during the maceration of Célèbre red, a part of the juice is drained out from the vat. This means that in the glass it exhibits the lightest, and the most aromatic side of Himalayan Cab - where dancing florals meets delicate strawberry fruits. Owing to the concentration of the grapes, a musty, red-bean paste (Chinese sweets) note emerges. This is by no means a ‘pool-side’ rosé, but one to be savoured and invites a hearty meal.

All of Me, Red 2018

The Eurus team has been asked many times if China has its own grape varieties. The All of Me range is our answer: Rose Honey. Originally introduced to the region in the 19ᵗʰ century, its origin can be traced back to middle Asia. Yet nowadays, Rose Honey can only be found in the Himalayas. Here, with the help of the Zhan brothers, the local community has rescued this rare grape from extinction. Its intense characters will capture anyone’s attention: smoked plums, soy, tea, and a fresh, leafy note. We used to fear that this wine will be ‘love it or hate it’, but from everyone who has tried it, we have not found one who wasn’t fascinated by both the wine and the story.
